Microscopy Unit

The Microscopy Unit provides a high quality professional service in electron and light microscopy, histology and photography. As a small Unit we offer a fast service to suits the needs of individual research and teaching projects. Small investigative projects can be carried out by our staff, and in the case of large or ongoing research projects, initial protocols can be developed and research assistants or postgraduate students trained for continuation of the work. Our equipment is well maintained and operated by highly efficient and enthusiastic staff. Please seek their involvement, in advising or assisting you in your microscopy needs.

Scanning Electron Microscope Our scanning electron microscopy needs are met using a JEOL JSM 840. We have gold coating facilities, and a critical point dryer to suit the requirements of your particular specimens.
We have a Philips CM10 transmission electron microscope, Lynx auto tissue processor and Reichert cryo substitution unit and ultramicrotomes. Our staff are experienced in immuno-gold labelling techniques and will happily discuss your particular requirements. Transmission Electron Microscope
Histology Laboratory We have an extremely well equiped light microscopy laboratory offering a full range of techniques including; brightfield, darkfield, phase, differential interference contrast, polarisation, fluorescence, and laser scanning confocal microscopy. We also provide a specimen processing, paraffin embedding, sectioning and staining service for those seeking skills in the art of histology. Digital image capture is available on all light microscopes.
