Degrees
The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is up to two years full-time and suits those returning to study after a gap, with a weaker first degree than required to enter honours, or with career plans incompatible with full PhD study. Students without a satisfactory Honours degree must first complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Preparation. This qualifying period gives you time to gain momentum and define your goals before starting experimental work. Equally, those with good energy and organisational skills can penetrate a research topic more thoroughly than is possible in Honours, and get published works out to launch their next career phase.
The Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) is the pre-eminent degree because of its scope and depth. It is a major undertaking for which a good Honours or Masters degree is needed as preparation and will define your place as a researcher. Although sacrifices (financial and professional) might need to be made, the rewards are career paths that other degrees cannot provide.
