Genes-to-Geoscience Research Center

What is the Genes-to-Geosciences Research Center?

Genes-to-geoscience is a coalition of research groups and individual researchers. We think exceptionally interesting and important science over the next couple of decades will arise through bridging from molecular technologies and biological detail, up to world-scales in space and geology-scales in time.

Participants in genes-to-geoscience include several national research centres at Macquarie, and many individual researchers. The Macquarie University Genes-to-Geoscience Research Centre provides coordination. Through Macquarie's CORE initiative, we appointed several outstanding new staff during 2006-7, and plan to appoint more during 2008-9

To postgrad researchers

Naturally the prime consideration for people intend on doing a PhD will be the quality of the individual research group they are joining. Macquarie has many world-leading research groups to choose from.[MW1] But on top of that, Genes to Geoscience at Macquarie offers a broader and richer culture in which to be a postgrad.

There are structured interdisciplinary discussion processes, in the form of working groups that will make you more than just a specialist. There is a lively social life. There is special encouragement to learn new research tools and do projects that cross discipline boundaries. There is financial support for your project and for building overseas connections. We are just beginning during 2008 to establish a program of intensive short-courses to equip our PhD graduates for long-lasting research careers.

Over 40 years since foundation in 1964, Macquarie has built a range of research strengths that are among world leaders within the general region of life sciences and earth sciences. These research strengths have been instrumental in Macquarie ranking among the top 9 research universities in Australia, despite relatively small size. Over the next 20 years, our aim is to jump to the next level through bridging to planetary scales. We intend for Macquarie to be the most interesting place in the world to do a PhD. Why not join us?

What we can offer to PhD students

Scholarships, either APA or MQRES (http://www.research.mq.edu.au/students/scholarships)
Scholarships extending over 3.5 years
$6000 p.a. of research support towards materials and travel, under the student's own control
Access to Macquarie University Postgraduate Research Fund (up to $4000 for research support or international conference travel)
Tutoring experience (and pay) in appropriate undergraduate units. These will be structured to give you progressively increasing responsibility through the course of your PhD, and you will develop a tertiary teaching portfolio to carry into your subsequent career
A range of intensive short-courses to sharpen your research skills, but using a maximum of 5 days per year of your time
