BIOL223

Introductory Biochemistry
and
Molecular Biology

The unit will revise and extend the basic properties of proteins, DNA and RNA and their building blocks. Metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, gluconeogenesis and fatty acid synthesis/degradation will be covered in sufficient detail to illustrate the energetics and control of anabolic/catabolic processes. The contribution of both molecular biology and key experiments to the developement of these schemes will be emphasised. Basic applications of molecular biology will include cloning, library construction and applications of the polymerase chain reaction. Considerable emphasis is placed on interpretation of data and problem solving.
