This unit considers the function of nerves and hormones in the regulation of body functions.
We begin by discussing how the selective permeability of the cell membrane gives rise to the electrical properties of nerves and muscle cells. The function of nerves and their organisation into central and peripheral nervous systems is investigated before we examine the specialised nerves and organs that provide us with sensory information.
The next topic covers muscle function, the various muscle types and the control of muscle activity.
The concept of homeostasis is introduced and the strategies of physiological control of blood pressure, metabolic and gastrointestinal function, nutrition and reproduction are studied.
This unit serves as an introduction to physiology and is designed for students doing just this one unit of physiology and for those intending to study the third year physiology units.
