 About Physiology II 2007

This unit considers the maintenance of body homeostasis from a systems control perspective. It covers the cardiovascular system including an examination of the electrical and mechanical functions of the heart, the interaction between the heart and the blood vessels, hormones and the autonomic nervous system in the control of cardiac output. Next we will study the role of the renal system in the control of the chemical composition of the body, water balance and body fluid volume. A brief overview of the respiratory system will follow before the unit is completed by an introduction to the integrated functions of the body systems in the control of blood pressure and body pH, and during exercise.

Practical classes make use of both computer-assisted learning as well as laboratory experiments. Some classes will involve measuring physiological parameters such as blood pressure and electrical conduction through the heart (the ECG) in humans. In these classes students will act both as investigators and experimental subject.
